Russian visitors to use Rubles in Turkey

Antalya

Munir Karaloglu, the governor of the southern city of Antalya in Turkey has confirmed recently that talks are ongoing between the capital city of Ankara and the capital city of Moscow to allow Russian tourists to use their own Rubles currency when visiting Turkey for vacations.

When speaking with Russian news groups recently, Karaloglu explained that both countries are working towards allowing Rubles being an acceptable form of currency in Turkey in an aim to increase not only Russian tourists but also trade opportunities between the two countries.

Russian tourist numbers in Turkey have increased substantially over the last few years particularly in the southern areas of Turkey such as Antalya where Russians are frequent visitors during the summer. It is not uncommon to find hotels and popular hotspots in Antalya featuring Russian signs and language options.

Why will Turkey accept Russian Rubles?

Munir Karaloglu confirmed that there are various ongoing agreements to see Rubles being an accepted form of payment in certain cities of Turkey. Allowing Russians tourists to use their home country currency is expected to see even higher volumes of tourists. It is seen that there would be huge benefits if Russians could use Rubles in Turkey and Turkish citizens could use Turkish Liras as a form of payment in Russia, something that has yet to be agreed between the two countries.

Antalya is the largest city on the western Mediterranean coastline of Turkey and saw a large increase in the number of foreign tourists visiting during the first 10 months of last year compared to the year previously. This period also recorded the highest number of tourists from Russia, ever. Antalya is served by an international airport with daily flights to numerous destinations making it easier than ever for tourists to arrive.

According to the Antalya Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism, official data that was collected from Antalya Airport showed that from January to October 2019 the holiday resort of Antalya played host to a total of 5.41 million tourists from Russia alone. When compared to January to October 2018, Russian arrivals in Turkey increased by a colossal 17.4%, making it one of the top favourite destinations abroad for Russians travelling.
