Sovalye Island the first of the twelve in the Gulf of Fethiye
This peaceful island is a haven for those who want to get away from it all in Fethiye. With no cars and no roads, it is one of the quietest, most peaceful spots you’ll see in this part of the world. Lately the island has become popular with those looking for seafront property in Fethiye - but the island is still considered the ultimate getaway.
Although it’s just a few hundred metres away from Fethiye Town, Sovalye Island might as well be another world entirely. The shores are interconnected by criss-crossing walkways that are shaded by whispering pine trees. Walking from end-to-end takes less than an hour, canoeing around the island takes an hour or a swim takes two.
It’s worth taking to the waters around Sovalye Island - you’ll be able to see ruins in the crystal clear water, dating back to late Roman times. Snorkel or paddle over submerged houses, part of a city wall, ancient churches and a Roman cistern that was turned into a chapel sometime during the Byzantine era. Elsewhere around the island you’ll spot old olive oil pots and amphora.
Walking inland, you’ll discover the remains of a crusader castle, hidden among the pines and the carob trees. The castle was built by the Knights of St John after they fled from the Greek Island of Rhodes. Local legend tells us that Sovalye Island became a haven during the Middle Ages for these former knights, who lived on the island as pirates.
You can catch a water taxi to Sovalye Island from Fethiye. Taxis travel over four or five times daily during the summer months, with the final return trip at 7pm. The return trip costs 10 TL. Make sure you’re at the pick up point a little early as timings can be unpredictable.
If you’re in need of refreshment there is one small hotel and a restaurant and bar on the island. Prices are a little higher than the mainland though so you might want to take your own food - and make sure you bring plenty of water.
The island’s main beach is near the drop off point and has a few sunbeds and shaded areas. You will need to pay a fee to use this beach. Other beaches around the island are free but smaller and stonier and don’t have facilities. If this doesn’t bother you you may find you have the beaches all to yourself.
Sovalye Island has become a haven for Fethiye property buyers seeking privacy and seafront homes in Fethiye. It’s not difficult to see why. Just minutes from the hustle and bustle of Fethiye Town, the island is the ultimate private getaway.
