Cruise in Turkey

Global cruise tourism continues reaching record levels, with Turkey increasing its position as a strategic Mediterranean hub with Istanbul emerging as a key starting point for international cruise itineraries.

Global Cruise Passenger Numbers Reach Record Levels

Global cruise passenger numbers reached 37.2 million in 2025, according to the Cruise Lines International Association, marking the highest level ever recorded for the industry. Passenger volumes are forecast to continue rising, reaching 38.3 million in 2026 and almost 42 million by 2029.

The Mediterranean remains one of the world’s strongest-performing cruise regions, hosting nearly 6 million passengers in 2025. The region recorded annual growth of 3.4%, showing its importance within the global cruise tourism market alongside the Caribbean and Asia-Pacific regions.

Industry executives say the continued growth highlights rising international demand for multi-destination itineraries combining culture, luxury travel, gastronomy, and coastal tourism. Turkey’s location between Europe, Asia, and the Middle East boosts its appeal within these travel routes.

Istanbul Gains Importance as Mediterranean Homeport

Officials say Istanbul is increasingly evolving from a cruise stopover destination into a major Mediterranean homeport where journeys begin and end. The city’s airport capacity, strategic geography, and cruise infrastructure attract operators seeking stronger regional connectivity.

AROYA Cruises President Sture Myrmell described Istanbul as an increasingly important base for Mediterranean itineraries. He said: “This confirms the strength of the market and the importance of Istanbul as a homeport for Mediterranean itineraries.”

Myrmell also highlighted the growing relationship between Mediterranean cruise tourism, Gulf markets and Turkey’s tourism sector, saying: “Turkey’s success both as a destination and as a homeport market further strengthens its role in the Mediterranean.”

Galataport Strengthens Istanbul’s Cruise Appeal

Galataport has played a major role in Istanbul’s transformation into a global cruise hub by combining modern port infrastructure with retail, dining, and waterfront tourism experiences. The development has helped position Istanbul as a destination and departure point for cruise passengers.

Myrmell said the project creates a stronger experience for visitors arriving in the city. He said that: “Guests do not just transit through Istanbul but make it a direct part of the reason for choosing the itinerary.”

AROYA Cruises will launch seasonal Istanbul-based operations beginning on June 6, offering seven-night itineraries departing from the city. The routes are expected to strengthen the role of Turkey within the Mediterranean cruise market, support tourism revenues, and international visitor growth.

Turkey Targets Further Cruise Tourism Expansion

Turkey has been expanding cruise tourism infrastructure as authorities seek to position the country among the Mediterranean’s leading cruise destinations. Kusadasi, Istanbul, and Bodrum are the country’s busiest cruise ports. Government officials confirmed that Turkey aims to increase annual cruise ship arrivals to 2,000 vessels by 2028 as investments continue in port infrastructure and tourism connectivity.
