The global e-commerce company Amazon has announced that it is going to open its first logistics centre in Turkey with an investment of more than 100 million USD and the creation of over 1,000 new jobs in the country.
Amazon in Turkey
Amazon first launched in Turkey back in 2018 and has since created 500 jobs to date. The new logistics centre is going to be based in the Tuzla district of Istanbul on the Anatolian side of the city and is scheduled to open by the end of Fall in an effort to support local businesses and address a soaring customer demand for Amazon in Turkey.
The company has said that it has already started to recruit employees for core functions including operations, human resources, and engineering. The total investment will exceed more than 100 million USD and employ more than 1,000 new workers once the centre has been opened.
Amazon has also said that current partners in Turkey who already help and provide delivery services will continue to be supported by the new centre.
Turkey’s support for Amazon
Ahmet Burak Daglioglu, the Chairperson of Turkey’s Investment Office, said that they have been working closely with Amazon to support the process. Daglioglu noted that Turkey is a regional centre for activities of many international businesses. He said: “Amazon’s investment decision, which will be the first logistics base in Turkey, prioritises sustainability and green transformation and creates employment.”
He went on to say: “This investment is very important for the further strengthening of our e-commerce sector, which has been gaining great momentum in recent years. We express our gratitude to the Amazon team that trusts and invests in our country.”
Amazon’s view
Stefano Perego, the Vice Present of EU Operations for Amazon said that the investment confirmed the trust that Amazon has in Turkey. He said: “We are extremely excited about the more than a thousand new job opportunities that we will create in our first year by providing a modern and safe working environment.”
