Turkish Airlines now flies to Vancouver in Canada

Turkish Airlines

On Sunday morning, Turkish Airlines (THY), the National flag carrier of Turkey, conducted their first direct flight from Istanbul to Vancouver, in Canada. This is adding to the growing list of places that they fly to in Canada, which until now had only included Toronto and Montreal.

Flight number TK075 landed at 4:17pm local time in Canada at Vancouver International Airport carrying a total of 167 passengers on board. The THY flight was welcomed by Mehmet Taylan Tokmak, the Turkish Consul General to Vancouver, and by Zafer Bolukbasi, the THY Toronto Director.

Tokmak noted that after an 11-month delay due to the coronavirus pandemic, the wheels of a THY plane had finally touched down in Vancouver. He went on to say: “We connect the Pacific side of Canada to our country. Thanks to direct flights to Vancouver, commercial, touristic, and cultural relations between the countries will gain momentum.”

For now, there are three weekly flights scheduled by the flight carrier, which will fly on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from Turkey to Canada.

Not just passengers travelling to and from Canada

Tomak noted that a large amount of cargo has also been transported on the first THY plane that landed in Vancouver. Noting Istanbul Airport’s important status as a global hub, Tokmak also said: “The plane is carrying 157 passengers on its way to Istanbul, many of whom are transit passengers.”

THY flies to 319 destinations now, both internationally and nationally, with 15 destinations within North America with the newest addition of Vancouver.

Turkish-German flight history

This isn’t the only good news for THY. SunExpress, a joint enterprise between THY and Lufthansa, a German carrier, set off on its first flight between Zonguldak, a northern Turkish province, and Dusseldorf, in Western Germany. This momentous flight took place on Sunday evening.

Direct flights between Dusseldorf and Zonguldak are now due to take place once a week on Tuesdays until July, as plans for the summer season increase this to twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays between the July and September busy period.
