Record visitors head to Cappadocia in January

Famous for the surreal landscapes and intricate rock formations in central Turkey, Cappadocia is a well-known destination for tourists and has attracted a record-breaking numbers of visitors already in 2023. In January, the region welcomed 174,222 tourists.

While the region is known for its natural beauty, rich history and beautiful culture, it became and continues to be a popular destination for local tourists and travellers coming from overseas.


Visitors to the attractions of Cappadocia

According to the Office of the Nevsehir Governor, the most popular attractions for Cappadocia were the Kaymakli Underground City, which saw 27,113 visitors, Goreme Open Air Museum, which saw around 48,287 visitors, and finally Zelve Archaeological Site, which had the highest number of visitors at 49,467. These numbers show a massive increase in tourism when compared to previous years. In January 2023 alone, there was a total of 123,244 visitors to the museums and ruins. 


The Governor speaks out

The Governor of Nevsehir, Inci Sezer Becel, spoke of their confidence for the coming season of tourists, adding that the number of visitors to the region has already begun to see a positive trend upwards.

Becel continued to say that: “Our expectation for 2023 is to break records in terms of tourist numbers, and the increase in interest in Cappadocia is driving this growth.”


International tourist perspective

Captivated by Cappadocia’s exceptional nature, a tourist from Indonesia, called the area “magnificent” and went on to praise the historical buildings for the “astonishing appearance” that they have. The tourist continued to say that he had every intention of sharing the experiences that he had while in Cappadocia with his friends when he returned home using the photos that he took during his trip.


Local visitor perspective

A local tourist, visiting from the southern Mersin area of Turkey, visited with friends and remarked that they were struck with the beauty of Cappadocia, having only seen the area in photographs before. He continued to say that he wanted others to be able to experience the beauty and Cappadocia in person for themselves.
