New data released by a European Airport Trade Association has shown that Istanbul Airport welcomed almost six million passengers during the month of June alone, which was more than any other airport in all of Europe.
Data from the Airports Council International (ACI) showed that passenger traffic was up by 115.4% when compared with the same month in June 2021. Istanbul Airport welcomed a total of 5.996 million passengers throughout the month of June 2022, just 1.7% marginally below the levels seen before the pandemic.

Another Turkish Airport, Antalya Airport within the Turkish Mediterranean ranked as the eighth busiest airport in Europe with a total of 3.91 million passengers travelling through the airport in June as travellers flocked to enjoy Turkish resorts and holidays.
London’s Heathrow Airport came in second place with an impressive 526% rise in passenger traffic when compared to 2021 numbers. The data also showed that Europe is seeing an increase of passengers as total numbers across the entire airport network jumped by 247% year-on-year to around 660 million people.
The other airports in the top ten ranked as follows:
IST – Istanbul with 5,996,071 passengers
LHR – Heathrow with 5,991,128 passengers
CDG – Paris with 5,450,028 passengers
AMS – Amsterdam with 5,232,957 passengers
FRA – Frankfurt with 4,992,606 passengers
MAD – Madrid with 4,536,555 passengers
BCN – Barcelona with 4,063,654 passengers
AYT – Antalya with 3,911,395 passengers
PMI – Mallorca with 3,715,151 passengers
LGW – London with 3,470,978 passengers
Traffic good but still not pre-pandemic levels
Despite the increase in general traffic, worldwide air travel has still not seen the same numbers as before the pandemic, however experts are confident that things are continuing to improve. ACI Europe’s Director General said: “The fact that volume across the continent still remained 28.3% below pre-pandemic levels for the first half of the year should not eclipse the sheer and unprecedented unleashing of pent-up demand that has occurred since March.”
