Antalya's two major airports are undergoing significant expansion and renovation as authorities invest in the infrastructure needed to accommodate growing tourism demand. Improvements at Antalya Airport and Gazipaşa-Alanya Airport are increasing passenger capacity while upgrading terminals, aircraft facilities, and transport infrastructure serving Turkey's Mediterranean tourism capital.
Antalya Governor Hulusi Şahin said investments at Antalya Airport have increased its annual passenger capacity from 35 million to 82 million. Aircraft parking positions have also risen significantly, increasing from 108 to 176 as the airport prepares for continued growth in international and domestic traffic.
Expansion of the domestic terminal and Terminal 2 has already been completed, with both facilities now operational. Other improvements include renovated VIP and CIP terminals, new aprons and taxiways, cargo security entrances, hangar areas, a general aviation terminal, and additional facilities for passengers and airport personnel.
Şahin said: "With its increased capacity, Antalya Airport has become one of the world's leading airports." Further second-phase investments are underway as authorities continue adapting the airport to the passenger volumes generated by Antalya's tourism industry.
Transport routes within Antalya Airport are also being reorganised following higher-than-anticipated vehicle movements. Şahin said most of the new internal road network was already open, with only minor finishing works remaining. Şahin said: "We have opened the roads; only some minor work along the curbs remains, and we will complete that quickly too."
Construction is also underway on a new airport control tower inspired by the lighthouses of the ancient Lycian civilisation. The tower is expected to be completed next year, becoming another major part of Antalya Airport's wider modernisation programme.
Investment is also being directed towards Gazipaşa-Alanya Airport, an important gateway for visitors travelling to Alanya, Gazipaşa, and other eastern parts of Antalya Province. The airport currently handles around one million passengers annually and has capacity for two million passengers, alongside six aircraft parking positions.
Şahin said the existing terminal had become insufficient for the airport's needs, while the absence of a dedicated VIP lounge represented another shortcoming. Construction has now begun on improvements designed to expand the terminal and provide passengers with better facilities. The Gazipaşa-Alanya works are scheduled for completion in October.
