Best places to buy a winter home
£100,000 – TurkeyEnjoying more days of sun per year than neighbouring Kalkan or Bodrum, Antalya is one of Turkey’s most southern Mediterranean resorts, and one of the most popular. How about a warm swim in the ocean at Christmas? A round of golf with friends in one of the many championship quality courses? Antalya is a vibrant year round city with an international airport and easy access – making it one of the top destinations for those looking to buy Turkish real estate.
Within Antalya you will find Alanya – a beautiful beach resort with historic centre popular amongst Scandinavians. Cameron Deggin of Property Turkey says: “Apart from enjoying year round sun, buyers can capitalise on the rise in property prices in Antalya.”
“Antalya is an apartment destination that’s great for holiday lets and you can get a three bedroom property in Antalya for £100,000. Alternatively, you might get a small golf villa in Belek for £150,000.” Says Deggin.
£200,000 – Cyprus and BarbadosCyprus – Capitalise on a strong pound against the Euro rate and pick up a 200,000 Euro property in Cyprus for £16,000 cheaper than what it would have cost you a year ago. Paphos remains one of the most popular areas to buy in Cyprus, although prices are down 30 per cent, tempting retirees, but not many investors.
Barbados – Not as expensive as one might think, it is possible to pick up a home in Barbados amongst the likes of Simon Cowell and Rihanna within this price bracket. Offering a wide range of developments and stunning beaches, Barbados has bounced back well from the global downturn, with over a million visitors heading to the island every year.
£300,000 – Tenerife, Malta, and FloridaTenerife – One of the best climates in Europe and one of the most popular tourist spots, it is no surprise that Tenerife makes this list. Only four hours away from the UK, and offering a beachlife all year round, buyers are looking to the upmarket area north of Costa Adeje to buy, moving to higher quality developments. £300,000 would buy you a stand alone villa, or an apartment within a five-star resort.
Malta – Perhaps more known as a summer destination, Malta is also a great spot for winter summer too. With a range of year round amenities and a lovely beach, a benign tax regime and widely spoken English attracts buyers. St. Julian’s is one of the top destinations for full time residents. A high end luxury apartment could cost up to £250,000.
Florida Gulf Coast – With the theme parks of Orlando, or the east coast Daytona Beach to enjoy, Florida has just about something for everyone. A magnet for European and Canadians, property prices are still around 20 percent down from the market peak, while you can pick up a home in a gated community for around £250,000.
£500,000 Plus – Maldives, Seychelles, and MiamiMaldives – Villas based within hotel complexes dominate this island found on the Indian Ocean ringed by beautiful reefs and a gorgeous turquoise sea. A private residence within a five-star resort could cost anywhere between $2 million up to an eye-watering $15 million.
Seychelles – More developed than the Maldives, the Seychelles are a collection of islands and a haven for divers and snorkellers and benefit from a time difference of only four hours difference with the UK. A one bedroom apartment could cost £225,000, while a home at the Four Seasons resort could cost up to £5 million.
Miami – A world class year round city full of celebrities, restaurants, and everything else one could imagine, Miami is perfect to escape for your winter sun. A Miami residence in a luxury setting with access to a marina and other state of the art services starts from around £900,000.
