According to official data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat), Turkey set an all-time record for total number of tourists visiting the country in 2024 as well as total revenue obtained.
Record tourist numbers and record revenue
Data released showed that revenue from tourists visiting Turkey increased by 8.3% in 2024 when compared to 2023, reaching $61.1 billion in total – setting a new all-time high. This was also higher than the original government targets of $59.6 billion stated at the beginning of the year.
Separate data from the Culture and Tourism Ministry showed that 52.63 million foreign tourists arrived in Turkey in 2024, which is an increase of 6.9% and surpasses the previous all-time high of 2023, which was 49.2 million total tourists.
When including visitors to Turkey who are of Turkish origin, such as Turks who live abroad and come home to visit family, the total number of visitors increases to 62.2 million people. This is a total increase of 9.8% year-on-year.
The number of Turkish citizens who chose to take trips abroad from Turkey also increased by 2.9% to reach a total of 11.3 million people. The data also showed an expenditure of $680 per person on these trips.
Visitors from the UK, Russia, and Germany
As with previous years, tourists from the United Kingdom, Russia, and Germany were the main nationalities visiting Turkey in 2024. Data showed that 6.7 million Russians visited, 6.6 million Germans arrived, and 4.4 million people from the UK made trips to Turkey.
Vice President, Cevdet Yilmaz, said: “This strong performance in tourism has not only revived economic activities but also contributed to our balanced economic growth, providing employment opportunities to many people, especially the youth.”
High tourism targets for 2025
Yilmaz noted that targets for tourism in Turkey for 2025 are high. The Turkish Government estimated that 64 million visitors will arrive to the country, bringing with them as much as $63.6 billion in revenues.
