Tourists in Turkey

Turkey has lifted visa requirements for citizens of the People’s Republic of China – a step in strengthening tourism, trade, and bilateral relations between the two countries. The policy allows Chinese passport holders to enter Turkey visa-free for short-term tourist visits and transit stays of up to 90 days within a 180 day period.

The decision was confirmed through a presidential decree signed by Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and published in Turkey’s Official Gazette. The regulation starts from the 2nd of January 2026.

What the New Visa Policy Means

Under the updated rules, holders of Chinese passports will no longer need to apply for a visa before travelling to Turkey for tourism or transit purposes. Visitors can remain in the country for up to 90 days in any 180 day period.

This move from the Turkish government removes administrative barriers between the two countries that previously discouraged spontaneous travel and short-term visits, particularly for leisure tourists and business travellers passing through Turkey as a regional hub.

Boost for Tourism and the Turkish Economy

China is one of the world’s largest outbound tourism markets. Chinese travellers are among the highest spenders per capita, favouring cultural destinations, shopping, gastronomy, and premium travel experiences – areas where Turkey excels.

The visa exemption is expected to increase Chinese arrivals to destinations such as Istanbul, Cappadocia, Antalya, and the Aegean coast. For Turkey’s tourism sector, the policy supports year-round tourism and higher visitor numbers.

Strengthening Trade and Investment Ties

The decision is also viewed as a strategic move to deepen economic and cultural links between the two countries. Easier travel leads to more business engagement, trade delegations, exhibitions, and academic exchange – supporting long-term cooperation across multiple sectors.

From a property and investment perspective, increased Chinese interest in Turkey could extend beyond tourism. Historically, rising visitor numbers often lead to stronger interest in real estate, lifestyle relocation, and long-term investment, particularly in globally connected cities such as Istanbul.
