The Turkish Transport and Infrastructure Minister, Abdulkadir Uraloglu, has recently announced that construction work on a new third runway and new air traffic control tower at Ankara Esenboga Airport has been fully completed, ready to serve new passengers and welcome new aircraft.
After visiting Ankara and examining the works of the new air traffic control tower and third runway, Uraloglu said in a statement released: “The annual passenger capacity of our Esenboga Airport will increase to 30 million.”
The modernisation of Esenboga Airport was originally planned in two stages in 2023, in order to meet increased air traffic and travel passenger demand. Uraloglu said: “Within the scope of the works we have initiated to make our airport capable of meeting the needs of the present era and to have a facility worthy of world capitals.”
The finished work included a new 77-metre-long air traffic control tower, and a third runway measuring 3,750 metres in length – this is long enough for the largest of aircraft to take off and land safely in Ankara.
The capital city of Turkey and the second largest city in the country after Istanbul, Ankara has a population of over five million people and is located within central Anatolia. The city serves as the administrative centre of Turkey since its foundation in 1923 and is home to several embassies, government institutions, and the Grand National Assembly of Turkey.
The Turkish government hopes that with the improvement of Esenboga Airport, Ankara will continue to strengthen. The city is currently an important hub for education with several universities and home to Turkey’s military and government institutions. The new airport will help to increase its position as a political and logistical centre.
