Pamukkale, one of Türkiye’s most iconic natural and historical attractions, has experienced a 12% increase in visitors in the first eight months of 2024, drawing a remarkable 1.7 million tourists. Known for its stunning white travertine terraces, ancient city of Hierapolis, and the famous Cleopatra’s Pool, Pamukkale continues to captivate tourists from around the globe.
This surge in tourism is attributed to several new initiatives, including the introduction of night museum tours, which allow visitors to experience the UNESCO World Heritage site in a unique way after dark. These tours, launched to enhance the visitor experience, have played a significant role in attracting more tourists, particularly international travellers, boosting Pamukkale’s appeal.
Gazi Murat Şen, Vice President of the Turkish Hoteliers Federation (TÜROFED), spoke about the rising popularity of Pamukkale, highlighting the significant growth in visitor numbers. “We have seen an increase in visitors from 1.51 million last year to 1.7 million this year, with international interest driving the rise," Şen said.
The thermal springs of Pamukkale, particularly Cleopatra’s Pool, where the water remains at a constant 36°C (96.8°F) year-round, continue to be a major draw. Tourists can enjoy a unique swimming experience surrounded by ancient ruins in this natural spa, enhancing the overall allure of the site.
Şen also emphasised that the total number of visitors for 2024 is expected to reach approximately 2.9 million by year-end, close to their initial goal of 3 million. "Night museum tours have been highly successful this year, and we anticipate even greater demand next year as more agencies promote them," he added.
Pamukkale’s growth is not only limited to its natural and historical sites. The recent opening of a physical therapy and rehabilitation hospital in the nearby Karahayıt neighbourhood is expected to boost winter tourism. This facility, specialising in thermal treatments, is likely to attract patients and visitors seeking wellness during the colder months, further contributing to the region’s year-round tourism potential.
As Pamukkale’s tourism numbers rise, its reputation as a must-visit destination in Türkiye solidifies. With increasing international interest, enhanced offerings, and the ongoing expansion of wellness tourism, Pamukkale is set to continue its upward trajectory as a world-renowned travel destination.
