Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloglu, has announced plans to modernise and renovate Esenboga Airport in Turkey’s capital city, Ankara. The plans include the addition of a new third Runway and several service buildings – bringing total capacity to 30 million passengers by 2025.

First phase: New Runway and service buildings

To be modernised in different phases, Uraloglu announced that the first phase of expansion is 98% completed. He said: “We are transforming our airport into a facility worthy of our capital, Ankara. We are in the final stages of constructing the new Runway.”

Uraloglu emphasised that once finished, the third Runway will be crucial to accommodate passenger and aircraft traffic increases. Uraloglu also stated that new service buildings are almost finished, including a technical block, ARFF station, and a flight control hanger. He said: “We plan to put these facilities into operation by the first quarter of 2025.”

Second phase: Terminal building expansion

Uraloglu stated that in the second phase of expansion, the Terminal building of Esenboga Airport will be expanded by a huge 40,000 square metres. This will allow the airport to handle increased passenger traffic due to the new Runway and ever-increasing popularity of Ankara as a travel destination. Uraloglu said that the current capacity levels of the airport are no longer adequate to meet demand.

Uraloglu highlighted that new airport projects will not hinder current airport capability whilst improvements are being made. Esenboga Airport is planned to handle up to 30 million passengers annually once all modernisations have been implemented.

The Minister finished by saying: “With our aviation investments, we are making it easier for the public to access air travel. While we are building new airports, we are also continuing to modernise existing facilities.”
