In the third quarter of this year, the tourism income in Turkey grew by an impressive 27.1% when compared to the same quarter a year ago, according to the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat).
Compared to last year, when a total income of 14.1 billion USD from tourism was generated, this year’s July to September quarter produced 18 billion USD in income. TurkStat made a statement saying: “Some 14.3% of tourism income was obtained from Turkish citizens resident abroad.”
During the three months between July and September of 2022, Turkey welcomed over 21.1 million visitors in total, which is an increase of 54% from year to year. Of this, 11.3%, equivalent to 2.4 million, were citizens of Turkey who are currently residing overseas.
In the third quarter of this year, it was averaged that the expenditure of visitors each night was around 89 USD, and the average visitors’ expenditure was 855 USD per capita.
Individual expenditure, according to the official statistics, represented 12.6 billion USD in the three-month period of the total tourism income for the country, while an additional 5.4 billion USD came from the expenditure of package tours.
The number of citizens of Turkey, in the third quarter, who visited countries overseas increased dramatically by 137.3% compared to the year before, rising above 2 million. Their average expenditure abroad was 534 USD.
In the first nine months of 2022, between January and September, tourism income brought in a revenue of 35 billion USD for Turkey, which was a hike of 67.9% on the annual statistics.
Additionally, separate to the TurkishStat announcement, the Culture and Tourism Ministry made a statement saying that Turkey had attracted around 34.8 million visitors from overseas in the initial nine months of 2022. This figure had almost doubled compared to the same period of the year before as tourists continue to flock to Turkey.
