According to the Airports Council International (ACI) World’s recently published report, Istanbul Airport was ranked as one of the busiest airports in the world last year in 2022 and the busiest airport in Europe.
The U.S.-based Atlanta Airport took the top spot in the ranking of the top 10 busiest airports in the world, while Dallas Fort Worth and Denver Airports from the U.S. ranked in second and third respectively.
Istanbul Airport was ranked as the seventh busiest airport in the world last year, with a total number of passengers for 2022 sitting at a huge 64.29 million, which was up by a total of 73.8% on a yearly basis. Compared to 2021, when the airport was ranked in 14th place, and 2020 when it came in at 28th place, Istanbul Airport has been rising in popularity across the years as it becomes a new go-to hub for air travel, according to the data from the report.
Even when compared to the pre-pandemic figures of 2019, the number of passengers that the airport of Istanbul had served was up by 23.2% in total. This is impressive because across the entire top 10 airports mentioned on the list, only Denver Airport (at 0.2% increase) and Istanbul Airport managed to see a rise in the number of passengers compared with data from the pre-pandemic travel era.
The other airports on the list were as follows:
