With officials in attendance from the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB), part of the new metro route comprising of 19 stations, which will act as a connection between the neighbourhoods of Mahmutbey and Kabatas in Istanbul, has been inaugurated and opened into the transportation system.
Opening the new metro in Istanbul
The opening of the new route, known as the Mecidiyekoy-Fulya-Yildiz route, is 2-kilometres long (1.24 miles) and will start at Mecidiyekoy and end two stops later. It was opened in front of a large gathering of eager citizens and public ready to use the route on their daily commute.
Huge investments in public transport already in 2023
The IBB was saying a warm “Hello” to the new year, according to Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu who joined citizens at the opening ceremony, with the opening of three new lines: the Mecidiyekoy-Fulya-Yildiz metro line which was opened to the public recently, the Dudullu-Bostanci metro line which welcomed passengers for the first time on January 6 and the new Baltalimani Biological Waste Water Treatment Plant that was officially opened on January 1.
The three new public services have totalled 20 billion Turkish Lira (1.07 billion USD) in total investment costs, the IBB said.
The Kabatas-Mahmutbey line has a total line length of 24.5 kilometres. It consists of 19 stations and has a total capacity of taking 70,000 passengers in one direction. The route will be passing through the following districts of Istanbul: Besiktas, Eyupsultan, Beyoglu, Kagithane, Esenler, Sisli, Bagcilar and Gaziosmanpasa.
The new stations in Istanbul and routes
The new Kabatas station will be integrated into both the Kabatas-Bagcilar tram route and the Kabatas-Taksim-Funicular, while the Yenikapi-Mecidiyekoy route will also become integrated with the above route. The Otogar-Bagcolar-Kirazli-Basaksehir-Olympic Metro route will be the final route to be integrated, starting at the Mahmutbey Station.
