About Yaliciftlik in Bodrum and Why It is Worth Visiting

By: Cameron Deggin

Sitting 20 kilometres, or a 25-minute drive from the town centre, international travel publications rarely talk about Yaliciftlik on the Bodrum peninsula of Turkey. But, for many Turks, it is a gem, untouched by tourism and an idyllic resort to visit and buy Turkish property in.

It is easy to see what the attraction is. Masses of pine forests combined with the Aegean Sea’s blue waters form a picture postcard scene worthy of sending home to your loved ones. While other coastal resorts, accused of abandoning their natural beauty to build masses of hotels and holiday homes, aim for a modern look, Yaliciftlik stays true to its roots.

About Yaliciftlik in Bodrum

Such is its delightful beauty, many famous gulet trips sailing the Gokova Gulf start from Yaliciftlik. Covering the bay between Bodrum and the Datca peninsula, it is a stunning destination of Turkey with many hidden coves to explore.

The Ciftlikoy farming village, with its large fig tree orchards, and beehive traps also falls under the district. Together they form a population of 5000, although this number drastically increases during summer as Turks from all around the country descend on the area to discover why its name has spread wide and far.

Fun Things to do in Yaliciftlik

As already mentioned, sailing is big business, whether it is around the Gokova bay, or hopping over to the Greek islands. Daily boat trips also depart to sail around the coastline. Stopping off in coves, the day is all about swimming, sunbathing, relaxing, and eating. While adrenaline junkies can enjoy a vast range of water sports available to rent by the hour from blue flag beaches.

Yaliciftlik’s fame also revolves around hiking and trekking in surrounding hillsides. After stopping off for a traditional Turkish village breakfast, Syangela ancient remains, sitting in Alaz Zeytin village of nearby Pinardag remains a well-kept secret among them.

During autumn, the social calendar’s main highlight, camel wrestling, attracts Turks from all around Bodrum. In this time-honoured tradition, camels wrestle each other, like they do in the wild, but these days, the attraction is dying off with the younger generation. However, elders make a day out of it, with BBQs, copious amounts of Raki and village bands to dance to.

Shoppers should visit the weekly village market, that happens in Yaliciftlik and nearby traditional Kizilagac village. This other Turkish tradition happening daily across the country shows no sign of dying out, as Turks continue to prefer buying fruit, vegetables, cheese, and olives from farmers, rather than supermarkets.

Otherwise, indulge in rest. Enjoy the long, uncrowded beach, feast on the traditional Aegean cuisine of fish and seafood in seaside restaurants, and admire beautiful scenery found no-where else on the peninsula.
