The national flag carrier of Turkey, Turkish Airlines (THY), has once again taken the lead within Europe for the number of flights, and is now ranked in the top 10 airlines in the world in terms of capacity and performance.
According to the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation (Eurocontrol) data, Turkish Airlines took the lead “flying more than twice as many flights as the airline in second place.”
It was also shown within the Official Aviation Guide (OAG) data that the flag carrier THY was now among the top 10 airlines in terms of capacity globally and the leader within Europe.
THY CEO’s optimistic for the rest of 2021
Turkish Airlines’ CEO, Ilker Ayci said in a statement: “I believe, just like 2020, we will conclude 2021 as the airline that showed the best management in the face of the pandemic.”
In March, figures were presented by Aycu that showed THY was the leading flight operator for flights in Europe operating during 2020 throughout the global coronavirus pandemic.
Aycu continued to say that: “Only able to provide 40% of its 2019 capacity during 2020, the flag carrier airline experienced the lowest reduction in terms of passenger numbers (62%) and was in the lead among network carriers when it comes to load factor (71%).”
During the pandemic in 2020, THY served a total of 28 million passengers, and despite this being down from 74.3 million in 2019, the airline still came out on top.
Turkish airlines and their cargo
Looking away from passengers towards the cargo side of the airline, the THY Cargo division boosted its market share to 4.7% during the year 2020; this was done by shouldering an important mission for when countries closed up during the pandemic. The cargo carrier’s rank rose from 8th last year to 6th this year amongst global air cargo firms.
The carrier market share also grew to 4.8% during just the first quarter of 2021, reporting a strong load factor of 82.2%, which is well above the average of the sector which is 63.4%.
