Antalya has once again secured its position as the world's leading city for Blue Flag beaches, with 232 locations receiving the internationally recognised environmental award for 2026. The achievement strengthens Antalya’s reputation as one of the Mediterranean’s premier coastal destinations.
According to the 2026 Blue Flag Awards by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), Turkey earned certification for 580 beaches this year. Antalya alone accounted for 232 of those beaches, comfortably maintaining its position as the city with the highest number of Blue Flag awards worldwide.
The latest results also helped Turkey retain its position among the world's leading coastal tourism destinations. The country currently ranks third globally for Blue Flag beaches, behind only Spain and Greece.
Speaking during a flag presentation ceremony at Mermerli Beach, TÜRÇEV Antalya Provincial Coordinator, Mustafa Ergiydiren, said: "With 232 Blue Flag beaches, Antalya is the city with the highest number of Blue Flag awards in the world. Cities in Spain, Greece and France follow, but we are pleased to maintain our clear lead."
The Blue Flag programme is one of the world's most respected environmental certifications for beaches, marinas, and sustainable tourism facilities. To qualify, locations must meet strict standards covering cleanliness, environmental management, safety measures, and visitor information.
Ergiydiren said that all participating beaches undergo inspections before receiving certification and continue to be monitored throughout the tourism season. Inspectors assess factors including water quality, beach cleanliness, safety facilities, lifeguard services, and the availability of environmental education materials.
He also noted that beaches failing to meet required cleanliness standards during the previous four years are not eligible to apply for Blue Flag certification, helping to maintain the programme’s credibility and international reputation.
The growth of Blue Flag beaches strengthens Antalya’s appeal among international visitors seeking high-quality coastal destinations. The province remains Turkey’s leading tourism destination, welcoming millions of foreign visitors each year to its beaches, resorts, and historical attractions.
Ergiydiren credited the achievement to the combined efforts of local authorities, tourism businesses, residents, and visitors. He added that TÜRÇEV will continue working to increase both the number and quality of Blue Flag beaches while promoting environmental awareness and sustainable coastal development.
