Domestic travel activity in Turkey recorded a sharp increase in spending during the third quarter of 2025, highlighting the strength of internal tourism demand during the peak summer season. New figures published by Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) show that domestic tourism expenditures climbed by 34.8% year-on-year in the July to September period – reaching 276.11 billion Turkish Lira in total.

More Than 21.5 Million Residents Travelled During Summer

According to the data, over 21.5 million residents of Turkey took at least one domestic trip during the third quarter of the year, emphasising the importance of internal tourism to the wider travel economy.

Trips involving one or more overnight stays increased by 5.5% when compared to the same period last year, with the total number of overnight domestic trips exceeding 27 million during the quarter.

Longer Stays Drive Higher Spending

According to the data, domestic travellers collectively recorded 230.8 million overnight stays in Turkey between July and September, with the average length of stay rising to 8.5 nights in total.

This represented a notable increase compared to the second quarter of the year, when the average stay stood at 5.8 nights, reflecting the seasonal impact of summer holidays and extended leisure travel.

According to local industry experts, the third quarter traditionally represents the busiest period for domestic tourism in Turkey, coinciding with school summer holidays, warmer weather, and peak coastal travel.

Individual Travel Accounts for Majority of Expenditure

Individual travel continued to dominate domestic tourism spending. Of the total expenditure recorded in the quarter, 84.5% was attributed to individual trips, amounting to 233.45 billion Turkish Lira. Package tours accounted for the remaining 15.5%, with spending in this category reaching 42.66 billion Turkish Lira, according to the statistics agency.

Food, Accommodation, and Transport Lead Spending Categories

When broken down by expenditure type, food and beverage represented the largest share of total travel costs during the quarter, accounting for 29.4% of spending. Accommodation followed with 23.8%, while transportation expenses made up 19.3% of total domestic tourism spending.
